Biking through the seasons in South Tyrol – the best times to visitBiking through the seasons in South Tyrol – the best times to visit
South Tyrol offers something special all year round. Each season has its own charm: from the apple blossom in spring to high-altitude summer tours and golden autumn rides with traditional Törggelen. Whether you're looking for relaxed spring tours, alpine challenges in summer, or scenic autumn rides – this is the place to be. We asked our hoteliers what makes each season so unique.
What makes spring so special?
Hannes, junior at Jagdhof Dolce Vita Experience: Spring in South Tyrol is simply stunning. By March, you can already start riding at lower elevations, while other Alpine regions are still buried under snow. The Vinschgau Valley, Merano region, and the area around Lake Kaltern are ideal for early-season rides. A true highlight? The apple blossom! The valleys turn into a sea of white and pink flowers – just magical.
What should you pack for a spring cycling trip?
Hannes: Spring weather can be unpredictable. A windproof jacket, long pants for cool mornings, and sunscreen are essential – the sun can already be strong. Gloves and a multifunctional neck warmer are also handy in case of wind.
What about May? What can cyclists expect?
Alex Resch, owner of BikeHotel Krone in Brixen: From May onwards, South Tyrol offers incredible variety. Areas like Brixen and Steinegg are perfect, as the trails are still quiet before the main hiking season starts. By mid-May, you can also explore higher-altitude routes – ideal for those looking for a bit of adventure.
Packing tips for May?
Alex: Lighter clothing is key, but layering is still essential. A rain jacket is a must, as quick showers are possible. If you're heading into the mountains, bring an extra warm layer – it can still be chilly at higher altitudes.
Summer is peak biking season in South Tyrol – time to explore the Dolomites?
Daniel Bernardi, Hotel Piccolo in Gröden: Absolutely! Now even the highest regions of the Dolomites are accessible. With the lifts open, you can save energy on the climbs and focus on epic descents. Classic routes like the Sellaronda or Latemar circuit are must-rides. If you prefer quieter trails, check out the Ahrntal Valley or Pustertal.
What should be in your summer biking bag?
Daniel: Besides the basics like a helmet and gloves, high-SPF sunscreen is a must. A hydration pack or bottle is essential for long rides. And don’t forget a lightweight rain jacket – summer storms can pop up unexpectedly.
What about autumn? Many say it’s the most beautiful time in South Tyrol.
Helmut, owner of Taubers Hotel Unterwirt: I couldn’t agree more. Autumn has a unique atmosphere – colorful forests, crisp air, and quiet trails. Biking around Brixen, Lake Kaltern, or Meran is pure joy. And then there’s Törggelen: stopping at a traditional tavern after a ride to enjoy local specialties – it doesn’t get better than that.
Packing tips for autumn?
Helmut: Warmer clothing, especially for mornings and evenings. A good bike light can be helpful, as the days get shorter. Whether spring, summer, or autumn – South Tyrol is a year-round biking paradise. With BikeHotels, you’ll always find the perfect accommodation. Pack your bike, visit us, and experience it yourself!
