Passo di Pennes
A steep challenge
Road bike
The Passo di Pennes lies in the midst of the Alpi Sarentini. We start in Sarentino. The pass is almost unknown to touring motorists and from the point of view of panorama does not match up to the passes through the Dolomites. At the week-end especially you see and hear very many motor cyclists. Ascent from Sarentino (990 m): 31.4 km and 1,220 metres of altitude. The road leads from Sarentino in a slight gradient for the first 20 kilometres and continues to Pennes, where the road climbs steadily from a gradient of about 8% to a 12% gradient. Not until the last kilometre before the Passo di Pennes does it become flatter again. Ascent to Vipiteno (880m): 13.5 km and 1,330 metres of altitude. From the cross-roads in Vipiteno, where the road branches right towards the Passo di Monte Giovo, the route quickly leads through the forest at a gradient of 8% to a maximum of 10% and over 5 switchbacks up to the Passo di Pennes. The narrow passage just before the Passo di Pennes with the large stone on the left is very picturesque.
